SUNBURY – The Sunbury Ruritan Club has participated in the Adopt-A-Highway Program since July 1993. They recently received a congratulatory letter from the State of North Carolina Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway Program, along with Governor Roy Cooper and James Trogdon, III, Secretary of Transportation.

In recognition of their years of service to protect the environment and enhance the quality of life for all North Carolinians, the club was awarded a distinguished plaque, two 25-year stars for their Adopt-A-Highway roadside signs, and a new safety vest with their 25-year seal.

The letter went on to read that nearly 5,000 Adopt-A-Highway groups have adopted approximately 10,000 miles of state-maintained roads. Last year more than 50,000 volunteers from all 100 counties picked up more than 1 million pounds of litter. Adopt-A-Highway volunteers save the taxpayers millions of dollars annually in roadside cleanup costs.

The Sunbury Ruritan Club’s Adopt-A-Highway stretch is from NC 32N at Kellogg Fork Road to NC 32S at Silver Springs Road. They schedule trash pick-up four times a year.
