SUNBURY – An Ahoskie man lost his life in a motor vehicle accident near here last week.

Alphonso Jenkins, age 77, was killed in an accident that also involved two commercial trucks.

Trooper Chamblee of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the accident occurred along a portion of US 158 that crosses the Great Dismal Swamp.

It was there at approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7 that Jenkins was operating a Ford SUV westbound. Chamblee said Jenkins’s vehicle traveled left of the centerline where it sideswiped an 18-wheeler headed east.

After impact, Jenkins’s vehicle then struck another eastbound commercial vehicle head-on. His SUV then traveled off the roadway where it partially entered the swamp.

Chamblee said Jenkins died at the scene. He added that the driver of the second commercial vehicle was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, Chamblee said.
