Back in March, both the Gates County Junior and Senior teams competed at the District 1 competition in Columbia, NC, where they earned impressive placements. The Senior team took 1st place in Rifle and 3rd place in Archery. Meanwhile, the Junior team brought home 1st place in Rifle, 1st place in Archery, and 3rd place overall.

Individually, junior Perry Newbern earned 1st place overall in Archery, and junior Connor Cowper secured 1st place overall in Rifle. These outstanding achievements qualified the Senior team and the two individuals from the Junior team for the prestigious state competition.

At the state event on April 26, the Senior team competed in shotgun, rifle, archery, and hunter safety skills. Meanwhile, Newbern and Cowper competed individually in their events. Their hard work and preparation paid off as Gates County did not come home empty-handed.

The Gates County Shotgun Team – comprised of Carson Stallings, Brier Vann, Lee Farmer, Jimmy Rountree, and Eric Eure – captured first place in their event. In addition, Newbern once again showcased his talent by taking first place in Archery at the state level.

These remarkable accomplishments would not have been possible without the time, effort, and dedication of their outstanding coaches, as well as the unwavering support from their families and the Gates County community. The Gates County school system is incredibly proud of the achievements of these young sportsmen and women and look forward to their continued success.

Congratulations to all the members of the Gates County Hunter Safety Teams!
