GATESVILLE – The Gates County Sheriff’s Office has received complaints from different citizens regarding a new scam.

Sheriff Ray Campbell said the scammers are portraying themselves to be from “Norton Anti-Virus” in an effort to allegedly to steal personal information and money from the victim. The scammers, who are not associated with Norton, are encouraging their victims to remove all the money from their bank accounts and transfer it to Bitcoin to allow them access.

“Remember, legitimate businesses will not pressure you into taking all the money out of your account and transfer it to cryptocurrencies, money orders etc,” Campbell warned in a post to the Gates County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Campbell suggested to make transactions, if possible, in person at the business if you have concerns about the legitimacy of a request.

As always, if you have any questions, contact the Gates County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our goal is to keep you and your personal information safe,” Campbell said.
