GATESVILLE – Two years from now, citizens across the United States will celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.

The time is now to start planning for an event of that historical significance.

At their meeting earlier this month, the Gates County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution in support of a statewide effort to celebrate the nation’s semi quincentennial and to appoint a local committee that will plan the county’s involvement in the event.

“The state is encouraging all 100 counties to participate and host local events,” stated Commissioner Linda Hofler.

Hofler added that the Museum of the Albemarle will help schedule events in each of the 14 counties it represents, to include Gates. She said $10,000 is set aside by the state for each county to conduct such events.

In part, the adopted resolution reads: America 250 NC has a mission to engage all North Carolinians and all 100 counties through their many signatures and officially recognized programs, projects, and events over the commemoration by inspiring future leaders and celebrating North Carolina’s contributions to the nation over the last 250 years; and by adoption of America 250 NC’s mission, the Gates County Committee is officially formed to achieve the goals of America 250 NC. The participants of the Gates County Committee will be strictly voluntary roles and there will be no compensation for participation.
