SUNBURY – Sondra Elaine Rountree Salter, 83, of 030 NC 32 North, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Salter was born in Hertford County on her father’s 40th birthday, April 14, 1940, the daughter of the late James Nathaniel “Bud” and Reva Harrell Rountree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bryan Jerome Salter, Sr.; and by her brother, James Oliver Rountree.

Raised in the St. John community, she was a 1958 graduate of Ahoskie High School and a 1962 graduate of East Carolina College (now University). She taught in Manteo, Camden, and Sunbury. Classes she taught included English, Home Economics, and Head Start in Sunbury. After teaching, she worked as a Nutritionist with the Hertford-Gates District Health Department, retiring in July 1993. She was a faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church and its Mary Magdalene Sunday School Class and enjoyed volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program in Gates County.

Surviving are her sons, Bryan Jerome Salter, Jr. (wife, Shannon) of Raleigh and Stephen Brent Salter (wife, Tina) of Sunbury. Also surviving are grandchildren, Noah Salter (Brittany), Andrew Salter, Shannon Hughes (Spencer), Stephanie Salter; and twin great-grandsons, Oliver and Jackson Salter.

In accordance with her wishes, a short and simple graveside service was held Sunday, January 14 in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Greg Jernigan.

A visitation was held in the fellowship hall of Beulah Baptist Church immediately following the graveside service.
