Candidate filing opens

Candidates wishing to submit their names for next year’s elections can file beginning at 12 noon on Monday, Dec. 4. The filing period will remain open until 12 noon on Friday, Dec. 15.

Those filing for local races, state senator, and state house of representatives will do so at their county board of elections office. Candidates for other federal, state, and judicial offices must register with the State Board of Elections in Raleigh.

Unless otherwise specified, all candidates must be registered to vote in the state, qualified to vote in an election for the office sought, and 21 years old by the date of the general election. No person may file for more than one office for any one election.

For the NC House of Representatives, Hertford and Gates counties are included in District 5, Bertie is in District 23, and Northampton is in District 27. For the NC Senate, all four of the Roanoke-Chowan counties are represented in District 1.

The filing fee for state senate or state house is $139.51.

Gates County offices that are up for grabs include two County Commissioner seats (Hobbsville District, Sunbury-Corapeake District), Register of Deeds, and two County Board of Education seats (Eure District, Sunbury-Corapeake District).

The filing fee is $466.31 for Register of Deeds; $87.19 for County Commissioner; and $5 for Board of Education.

The Gates County Board of Elections Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 25 Medical Center Road, Gates. For more information, call 252-357-1780.

In Bertie County races, candidates can file for County Commissioner (District 1, District 4) and Register of Deeds.

The filing fee is $519.28 for Register of Deeds and $110.78 for County Commissioner.

The Bertie County Board of Elections Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 210 W. Watson Street, Windsor. For more information, call 252-794-5306.

In Hertford County, candidates can file for three County Commissioner seats (District 1, District 2, District 3) and Register of Deeds.

The filing fee is $482.71 for Register of Deeds and $169.74 for County Commissioner.

The Hertford County Board of Elections Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 418 Everett Street, Suite A, Ahoskie. For more information, call 252-358-7812.

Northampton County offices include two County Commissioner seats (District 1, District 2), Register of Deeds, and four County Board of Education seats.

The filing fees are $496 for Register of Deeds; $77 for County Commissioner; and $78 for County Board of Education.

The Northampton County Board of Elections Office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 9495 NC Hwy 305, Jackson. For more information, call 252-534-5681.

Statewide races include Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor, Commissioner of Agriculture, Commissioner of Insurance, Commissioner of Labor, Secretary of State, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Treasurer, NC Supreme Court Associate Justice (seat 6), and NC Court of Appeals Judge (seats 12, 14, 15). Various districts will also include races for Superior Court Judge, District Court Judge, and District Attorney.

The primary will also include races for U.S. House of Representatives (Districts 1-14) and President of the United States.

Once filed, the deadline to withdraw a notice of candidacy is Dec. 12.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday, March 5. Voters will choose which candidates will be the party nominees for the general election in November 2024.
