Local teams advance to state playoffs

Each of the Roanoke-Chowan area’s public schools will see their football seasons extended by at least one week….hopefully more.

On Saturday, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association released their state playoff brackets for each of the four divisions.

At the Class 2A level, Hertford County (8-2 overall) gained a #12 seeding in the Eastern bracket. The Bears will host #21 St. Pauls High School (6-4 overall) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 in opening round action.

Three other local teams, all at the Class 1A level, will also play at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 in their respective state playoff openers.

Bertie (4-5 overall) is seeded 11th in the Eastern bracket. The Falcons will face #22 Southside High School (4-6 overall) on Friday.

Gates County (5-5 overall) is seeded #14 in the Eastern bracket. The Red Barons will host #19 Weldon High School (4-4 overall) in Friday’s first round.

Northampton County (6-4 overall) is seeded #17 in the Eastern bracket and will travel to #16 Hobbton High School (5-5 overall) on Friday.

Other area teams invited to the state playoffs, with opening round games on Friday, Nov 3, include:

Class 3A: #10 Currituck County (home vs. #23 South Johnston)

Class 2A: #2 Northeastern (home vs. #31 North Johnston); #18 Edenton-Holmes (at #15 Midway High School); #26 Camden County (at #7 Princeton High School); #29 Roanoke Rapids (at #4 Nash Central); and #9 Martin County (home vs. #24 Southeast Alamance)

Class 1A: #9 Southeast Halifax (home vs. #24 Union High School); #10 Perquimans County (home vs. #23 East Columbus); and #26 Northwest Halifax (at #7 Lakewood High School).
