MATTHEWS, NC – Mark Riley Franklin of Matthews, NC, passed away peacefully in Charlotte, NC, at the age of 51 after battling ALS for a couple of years.

Mark, who preferred to go by his middle name, Riley, was lovingly known as “Scoot,” “Riles,” and “Nuemse” by his family and close friends.

Riley was born in Charlotte, NC to Robert (Bob) Franklin and Joy Brown Franklin on August 24th, 1971. He attended Sanderson High School and Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC, where he graduated and went on to Wake Tech and NC State in Raleigh, NC.

Riley had a variety of work experiences in his life, starting as a paperboy at age 12 and went on to work as a Pizza Hut employee, a Champs Bartender, a Real Estate investor, and settled into working at Harris Teeter in Customer Service and Marketing for the last 15 years. When Riley wasn’t working, he loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed going to concerts throughout the country with

friends. Motley Crue was a favorite. He enjoyed spending time on the water (river or lake or ocean) with his friends and participating in any water activity. You could find him helping friends when they were in need and was blessed with very special friends who helped him in the same way. He loved playing with his beloved cat, Q-Bert, who provided hours of delight. He dearly loved his country.

Mark Riley Franklin is survived by his daughter, Casey Marie McAuley; his parents, Bob and Joy; and his brother, John Caldwell Franklin, all of the Raleigh, NC area.

A memorial service to celebrate Riley’s life was held June 10 at Heritage Funeral Home – Weddington Chapel. The family received friends immediately after the service
