GATESVILLE – As it often occurs in athletics, a loss can make an individual or a team strive to put forth a better effort.

That’s exactly what happened in the case of the Central Middle School girls basketball team.

On Monday, CMS avenged their only loss of the season and defended their home court in the process by routing Washington County Middle School, 63-38, to win the 2022-2023 Coastal Athletic Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Vikings, who were also regular season champions, ended the season with a 14-1 record. The only loss was by one point earlier in the season vs. Washington County.

In Monday’s title game, the Vikings clicked on all cylinders on both ends of the floor.

Central Middle had two players to score in double figures in the championship game: Malana Jordan (21 points) and Zariah Rogers (16 points).

Adding to the victorious effort were Zoey Nowell and Gracie Tatem, each with eight points, along with six points from Claire Jones, and two points by Ezera Hathaway.

Other members of the team who can called themselves champions are Adalyn Boone, Jordan Parker, Karmyn Arce, Myah Rountree, Ni’kyria Burke, Raigen Maslowski, and Josie Turner.

The Vikings are coached by Kaila Knight and LB Wolfrey.
